While legends such as Billie Holiday and Count Basie made their greatest impact with visceral, blues-soaked statements, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington succeeded by lending their work unmatched grace and precision. This is a roundabout way of saying that no one is better suited to interpret the Duke than Ella, and the evidence is contained within these three CDs. Discs 1 and 3, recorded in June 1957, feature the support of the full Ellington band and are a complete joy, from Fitzgerald's terrific scat vocal on "Rockin' in Rhythm" through the extended four-part suite "Portrait of Ella Fitzgerlad," which adds Ellington's spoken observations and Billy Strayhorn's piano accents. However, the real highlight is the middle disc, recorded in the fall of that year, which finds Ella fronting a small band boasting Ellington's former tenor star Ben Webster. Most of this disc includes wonderful violin from Stuff Smith and supple guitar from Barney Kessel; the remaining cuts feature Oscar Peterson's trio. Of particular note are the three warming Ella-Kessel duets and the consistently charming work of Webster. By combining big-band and small-band sides, this collection emphasizes the flexibility of both Ellington's songs and Fitzgerald's interpretive powers. --Marc Greilsamer

It's well known that Ella's songbook series, beginning in the mid-1950s, gave her career a boost and also focussed renewed attention on the qualities of the great writers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and the Gershwins. Her attention to the output of Ellington was equally welcome because, although jazz snobs rate his instrumental works higher than his songs, the dividing-line is not entirely clear and even the pure songs have an individual language distinct from those on Ella's other albums. The other factor that makes this three-disc set different is that the composer's own band appears on over half of the material, as an instant collaborator in making the songs both compatible with Ella and different from previous Ellington versions. A revealing light is thrown on this process by the new inclusion of 27 minutes of studio rehearsals for a single tune, "Chelsea Bridge". The balance of the original album's tracks, begun before the big-band sessions, have small-group backing featuring variously Oscar Peterson, Barney Kessel, violinist Stuff Smith and ex-Ellingtonian Ben Webster, convincingly complementing the overall concept. --Brian Priestley

いっぱい入ってます
ソングブックを作るって大変な仕事だな～と思う。
これだけたくさんの名曲たちをきっちり噛み砕いて、消化して
レコーディングに望むわけだから・・・
他にも数々のソングブックを残しているけど、エラってすごい。
３枚目はリハーサル風景等、オマケです。
エリントンが、プレイヤーにとことんダメ出しをしているところや、
エラが思いっきりセキ払いしている様子など、臨場感たっぷりの舞台裏も楽しいです（でも、マニア受けかも）。
ちなみにこのＣＤは３枚組で、紙ジャケです（中身も）。なので、私は
中身を出してケースに入れ替えてます（取り出しにくいです）。

絢爛たる音絵巻
　本作はエラがVERVEに残した「SONG BOOK」シリーズの代表作であるエリントン集。このシリーズは他にロジャース＆ハート、コール・ポーター、アーヴィング・バーリン、ジョニー・マーサー、ジェローム・カーンそしてガーシュインと、錚々たるビッグネームが名を連ねるが、本作が最も優れている。その理由は他の作曲家たちの作品に比べて、エリントンの作品が見劣りしないどころか、年を経るごとにますます輝きを増していることが挙げられる。

　しかもこの作品を録音した時点でデュークは現役バリバリで、彼の自慢のオーケストラが伴奏をして、彼と右腕のB･ストレイホーンが、このセッションのために新たにアレンジを提供をするというゴージャスなつくりになっているのだ。

　さらにベン・ウェブスターとスタッフ・スミス(vln)を中心にした、コンボによる伴奏のトラックもあって、これが出色の出来。ウェブスターが絶好調！デュークには申し訳ないが、オーケストラの演奏よりもこちらのほうが、エラの歌にフィットしているように思われる。

　80年代に最初にリリースされたCDよりも音質は格段に向上しているので、多少値は張るが、買い替えても絶対に損はしません。そして蛇足ながら、2年前にドイツのスピーカーズコーナー社から再発されたアナログボックスがジャケ、音質共に素晴らしい出来なので、このCDにぞっこんのかたには、入手を強くオススメいたします。
