Album Details
Along with the Modern Jazz Quartet, the Chico Hamilton Quintet with Fred Katz were the leading practitioners of Chamber Jazz, devoted to a mid-century blend of Classical and Jazz music that called itself third stream; it was the shape of things to come for progressive Jazz. Eric Dolphy and Gabor Szabo were among the figures who would eventually work with Hamilton. Our set couples the entire, highly regarded album Zen by cellist Fred Katz where he is backed by Hamilton and the Quintet along with the highlights of the Quintet's own 1956 set. Both albums are highly sought after and long out of print. This Hamilton-Katz lineup would feature famously the following year (1957) in the Burt Lancaster-Tony Curtis film "The Sweet Smell Of Success"; a great cinematic moment in Jazz. FiveFour. 2007.
