Open Up and Say ...Ahh!+アメリカンルーツの軽やかなブレンド
06年にDef Leppardがカヴァーアルバムである「Yeah! 」をリリースしているが、
曲目のチョイスはこちらの方が良い。演奏・アレンジ・歌唱力ではLeppardには
落ちるが、カヴァー集としての纏まりと雰囲気はこちらの方が上だと思う。
基本は分かり易さだろう。Poisonの軽快でサクサクとしたノリは久々な気がする。
ややオーヴァープロデュースであちこちに手を出した感のある「Flesh and Blood」
での複雑さではなく「Open Up and Say ...Ahh!」の頃のシンプルで楽しい音創り
に徹しているのが良い。
元来、演奏の妙を堪能する形のバンドではないので、軽快なメロディとタテノリ
に主眼を置いているのは正解。
しかし、単なるポップメタルの焼き直しではなく仄かなアメリカンルーツへの
回帰というか彼らのルーツを垣間見せる姿勢が宜しい。
サザン&カントリーの大御所であるThe Marshall Tucker Bandの#5「Can't You See」
をピアノを絡めながらアクースティック且つエレクトリックでフュージョンさ
せたり、懐かしのパワーポップバンドであるRomanticsのヒットシングル#6「What
I Like about You」をブルースハープを交えてポップメタル風に飛ばしたり、
Rolling Stonesの#7「Dead Flowers」を適度に泥臭く歌ったり、とややアーシー
な雰囲気を加えた所が素晴らしい。
彼ら持ち前のスピーディなロックも健在。David Bowieの#2「Suffragette City」や
Tom Pettyの#4「I Need to Know」では疾走感のあるカヴァーが聴ける。
「Flesh and Blood」以降のオリジナル作はどうにもイマイチ以下のPoisonだった
が久々に良いアルバムを聴いた。

会心のロックン･ロールカヴァー集
POISONの５年ぶり・８枚目のスタジオアルバムは、７０年代を中心としたロックン･ロールのカヴァー集です。オリジナルの雰囲気を壊さずに、POISONらしい軽いノリに仕上がっているのはさすがです。
９〜１３曲目が、以前録音した曲をそのまま収録している点に多少の不満は感じますが、違和感はありません。
８０年代から生き残り、一時期を除き２０年間にも渡りほとんど音楽の方向性を変えず、ロックン・ロールを演奏し続ける彼らを、もっと評価してもいいのでは、と感じるリスナーは私だけではないでしょう。
