John Hurt's music might seem easy, but not all the contributors to Avalon Blues: A Tribute To The Music Of Mississippi John Hurt get it right. Whatever the song--blues, ballad, ragtime ditty--Hurt staked his claim to it in performance, telling its story as if he were talking to a sleepy child, his guitar murmuring quietly in the background. The essence of the style is gentleness, and under the boisterous touch of Steve Earle "Candy Man" fragments. Bill Morrissey ("Pay Day") seems to be trying to sound even older than his model, and Victoria Williams was surely ill-advised in singing "Since I've Laid My Burden Down" like a bad-tempered fairy. But Bruce Cockburn ("Avalon, My Home Town"), Beck ("Stagolee"), Alvin Youngblood Hart ("Here Am I, Oh Lord, Send Me") and Gillian Welch, ascetic as ever in "Beulah Land", succeed in conjuring Hurt's benign spirit without sacrificing their own, and there are further amiable renditions by Taj Mahal, Ben Harper and Lucinda Williams, whose "Angels Laid Him Away" is enhanced by Colin Linden's exquisite electric dobro. --Tony Russell

ルーツ！
最近聴いている音が、非常にフォーク、カントリー、トーキング・ブルーズに影響されたものが多く（キャットパワー、ブライトアイズ、ジャック・ジョンソン、ニルヴァーナ・アンプラグド、細野晴臣(フライングソーサー」、Leyona)、これは！と思い、レコード棚からひっぱりだしてきました。

いわば、アコースティック・ブルーズ（エロクトロニックなシカゴ・ブルーズと区別する）の巨人、ミシシッピ・ジョン・ハート。
ベック、タジ・マハール、ベン・ハーパー、といった人達がカバーしています。
原曲がシンプルなためか、みなさん淡々と、ギミックなしで、しかも愛情たっぷりに演奏しています。

イギリス人のジミー・ペイジや、エリック・クラプトンが、シカゴ・ブルーズに影響を受けているのはあきらかですが、アメリカのミュージシャンがあからさまにブルーズをリスペクトした演奏をすることは、過去の例としてあまり無いような気がします。
あるとしても、イギリスから逆輸入したジミ・ヘンドリックスを、今、ベン・ハーパーが真似る、といった一種のねじれが存在する気がします。
このアルバムを聴くと、そういった奇妙なわだかまりから解放され、アメリカのミュージシャンたちが、嬉々として自分らの音楽のバックボーン、ルーツに立ちかえっているような気がします。

しっとり、じっくり、なにげに流しておくと妙に落ち着くアルバムです。
