   本作『Music from Big Pink』はロック界を根本から変えた、たぐいまれな1枚として際立った存在感を放っている。サイケデリック革命真っ盛りの1968年にレコーディングされた本作だが、ザ・バンド（およびプロデューサー兼サイドマンのジョン・サイモン）は現実離れしたビジョンを追い求めたりせず、アーシーな方向性を選んだ。というわけで、ワウ・ワウ・ペダルやテープ・ループは影を潜め、フィドルやマンドリンが前面に出てくる。

   ロビー・ロバートソン、ベーシストのリック・ダンコ、ピアニストのリチャード・マニュエルが全11曲を提供したこのデビュー・アルバムは、メンバー間の対等さがもっとも発揮された作品と言えそうだ（その後すぐに、ロビー・ロバートソンがグループのスポークスマンとして頭角を現すことになったが）。中でもマニュエルは2曲でヴォーカルを担当する他、物悲しいオープニング曲「Tears of Rage」をボブ・ディランと共作している。本作以降、マニュエルの役割は減っていき、メンバー5人の間で保たれていたバランスは崩れることになった。ザ・バンドの最高傑作としては、本作の続編と言うべきアルバム『The Band』を挙げる声が多い。だが実は、本作こそザ・バンドの真髄であり、その出来ばえは卓越している。

   今回のリマスター・リイシュー盤には、ボーナスとして9トラックが追加された。ロバートソンによるレア・トラック「Ferdinand the Imposter」やスタンレー・ブラザーズのカバー「If I Lose」など、聴きどころ満載だ。（Steven Stolder, Amazon.com）

On this record, released in 1968 at the height of the psychedelic revolution, the five members of the Band (along with producer-sideman John Simon) eschewed spacey diversions, opting for an earthier route. Soon enough, wah-wah pedals and tape loops were making way for fiddles and mandolins. The group's most democratic effort (Robbie Robertson would soon emerge as the ensemble's mouthpiece), the debut's 11 songs come from Robertson, bassist Rick Danko, and pianist Richard Manuel, who contributes two songs and cowrote the doleful opener, "Tears of Rage," with Bob Dylan. Manuel's role would diminish from this point hence and the balance he brought to the quintet would be missed. Many would argue that Big Pink's sequel, The Band, represents their crowning achievement. The truth is, Big Pink is the purest distillation of the Band, and their preeminent recording. リチャード・マニュエルに捧げるレビュー
こいつは、とても重たいアルバム。
レコードをターンテーブルに載せるのさえ重く感じられた。
それにもかかわらず、毎日のように聴いてしまう。

ロックにしても歌に違いはないのだから、ボーカリストの声に魅力が感じなければ聴かない。
ザ・バンドには、魅力的な声を持ったボーカリストが、なんと３人もいる！
曲ごとに、あるいは１曲の中のパートごとにリードボーカルが交代したり、
彼ら３人による男らしいハーモニーは、ザ・バンドの最大の魅力だと思う。
僕は３人の中でとりわけリチャード・マニュエルが好きで、
本作と茶色い２枚目は彼の活躍が目立っているから、ザ・バンドのアルバムの中でも際立っている。
どちらも１曲目と最後の曲でリードを取ってるのはリチャードだし、
リチャード作の楽曲も収録されている（これがまたいい曲なんだな！）。
ザ・バンドの真のリードボーカリストはリチャード、
茶色いアルバムの製作過程を紹介したビデオの中でリック・ダンコがそう言ってたし、
僕もそう思う。
リチャードはリードボーカリストの中のリードボーカリスト。

こんなこと書いてたら、また泣けてきた。
さ、アメリカン・ロックの最も重要なレコードを聴こう！
「ザ・ウェイト」のサビの印象的な輪唱、
「アイ・シャル・ビー・リリースト」のリチャードの美しいファルセットのソロに、
きっと魅了されることと思います。

若者よ、騙されたと思って聴いてみろ！
最初にこのアルバムを聴いたのは、24歳頃だったと思います。
普段聴いていたアルバムとは明らかに違う、淡々とした曲ばかりが並ぶアルバムだなあ･･･と思ったのですが、妙にはまってしまって･･･
いまだに、このアルバムのどこがそんなに好きなのか、きちんと分析できないのですが、朝に晩に、このアルバムばかりかけて、暮らしていた時期がありました。
「疲れた生活の果てに･･･」みたいな印象もあるけど、決して、ワビサビだけのアルバムってわけじゃないし、淡々とした中にも何かが詰まっているというのでしょうか、単純に、「こういうものです」と言い切れる中身じゃないのです。
20年弱、聴き続けて、いまだに新しい発見がある、奥の深いアルバムです。
おそらく、最近のロックばっかり聴いている人が聴いても、心惹かれるものがあるんじゃないかと思います。
別にこのバンドが誕生した歴史的背景など、なんにも知らなくていいから、「騙されたと思って聴いてみな！」と若いリスナーに聴かせてやりたい一枚です！

哀感溢れる孤高の名作
６８年発表の１ｓｔ。いわゆる歴史的名盤って奴である。音楽が鳴りはじめれば、「間違いない」と誰もが納得してしまう説得力を持っている。宗教的な崇高さすら感じさせる孤高の作品でありながら、人懐っこくって暖かみのある演奏は一度聞いたら二度と手放すことが出来なくなる程。哀感の溢れるメロディとヴォーカルは胸にグサリと突き刺さってくる。エリック・クラプトンやいわゆるパブ・ロックと言われるグループの一群が、なぜザ・バンドに憧れたのはこのアルバムを聞けばすぐに理解できると思う。個人的にも完全なスリ切れ盤の一つとなっている。(ＣＤで良かった。) ボブ・ディランの隠遁生活時代の共同作業の成果の一つとして生まれたという経緯があり、ディラン絡みの曲もあるが、長い下積み時代に書き溜めた曲を持ち寄ったのだろう。曲そのもののクオリティはザ・バンドの全てのアルバムの中でもダントツのものである。娘に裏切られた父親を歌った１．の「怒りの涙」は邦題からして凄いが、音を聞けば歌詞の内容が分からなくとも、伝わってくるほどの説得力。全曲必聴。
