Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. Like the film, the two-disc special edition of A League of Their Own is a family affair. Director Penny Marshall and her daughter Tracy Reiner (who played Betty "Spaghetti" Horn) are on the group commentary track along with Lori Petty (Kit Keller) and Megan Cavanagh (Marla Hooch). Then Marshall, her brother Garry (who played league owner Walter Harvey), and Reiner are among the substantial contributors, along with Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell, and others, to the new 52-minute documentary. (Tom Hanks and Madonna appear briefly in older interviews.) Both features offer substantial insight into the making of the film, discussing baseball boot camp, Penny Marshall's style ("Penny doesn't call 'Cut' for like nine years"; "No, I don't call cut because you never know what's going to happen."), and how the present-day ballplayers were older actors with the younger actors' voices dubbed in. None of the 15 deleted scenes was crucial to the film, but some are substantial and well worth watching--Kit Keller has a bar showdown, Hanks and Davis's characters have a scene together that also helps explain a later scene, and there's a Women's World Series subplot involving Marla. The film is viewable in either widescreen or full-screen on a double-sided disc, and Madonna's video "This Used to Be My Playground" makes its DVD debut. The features fall a little short on providing historical perspective, so it's too bad they don't include the League of Their Own documentary, which was packaged with the film in one of its VHS editions. --David Horiuchi

Grate cast ... formula movie
Yes everybody did a good job in this movie. However there was nothing exceptional about it. If the cast had been of any less caliber, this would be a forgettable movie. Both Tom Hanks and Geena Davis have made better movies. The only reason I gave this movie three stars is because it can stand on its own and should not be compared to these better movies.

オレゴンの田舎町の野球チームで華々しく活躍する姉妹のドティとキットの元へ、ある男性が訪れる。彼はプロ野球のスカウトマンで、女子野球開幕に向けて選手を探していたのだ。

ドティとキットは、美人で名選手揃いのロックフォード・チームに入った。パワフルでキュートで個性たっぷりの彼女たちにあてがわれた監督は、かつて野球界を賑わしたアル中のジミー・デューガンだった。

時は第２次世界大戦、野次を受けながらも頑張る女性選手の活躍と、だんだん生気を取り戻していくジミー、そしてドティとキットの葛藤など見所はたくさんです。ほのぼのとしたヒューマン・ドラマなので野球のことは全然わからない人でも楽しめます。
