   マイルス・ディヴィスとギル・エヴァンスの共同作業は、ジャズ史上屈指の名コラボレーションと評価が高い。『クールの誕生』セッション等を通じて40年代から知りあいだったマイルスとギルは、57年の『マイルス・アヘッド』を皮切りに、58年の『ポーギーとベス』でも絶妙なコンビネーションを聴かせた。

   そうした過程を踏まえ、59～60年にコロンビアでのコラボレーション第3作として録音したのが本作。マイルスは当時、スペイン音楽に強い関心を示していた。本作の少し前に録音した『カインド・オブ・ブルー』でもその傾向は見られたが、本作では正面からスペイン音楽に取りくんでいる。16分余りにわたって演奏される<1>は、スペインの作曲家ロドリーゴの人気曲を、ギルの斬新なオーケストレーションで再構築した本作の目玉曲。木管楽器を多用したギル特有の深みのあるサウンドをバックに、マイルスがソロを聴かせる絶品だ。<3><4><5>はスペインを素材にしたギルのオリジナルで、これまたすばらしい演奏だ。（市川正二）

From his early days as a sideman for Charlie Parker, through his groundbreaking Birth of the Cool sessions, to his stunning small groups of the '50s and '60s, through to his electric renaissance, the trumpeter, bandleader, and composer has left a deep mark on all who came after. He is one of jazz's true giants. Sketches of Spain, though one of Davis's most commercially successful sessions, is also one of his most controversial. Re-teaming with arranger and composer Gil Evans, who played such a pivotal role in Davis's 1949 Birth of the Cool recordings, Davis recorded a series of large group albums beginning in the late '50s, including Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead, and Quiet Nights. Sketches of Spain, with its emphasis on flamenco, rich orchestrations, and relaxed tempos, is certainly one of Davis's most mellow recordings (he even works out on fluegelhorn), and proved to have broad appeal. To some critics, however, the project was "elevated elevator music." An expanded version of the album, featuring alternative tracks and unreleased material, was issued in 1997 by Columbia Legacy. --Fred Goodman

スペインとジャズの出会い
マイルス・デイビスの実験精神が、スペインとジャズ、クラッシックとジャズなどアポリアと思われていた組み合わせを見事に一体化させた好例である。ビ・バップ、クール、ハード・バップ、モード、エレクトリックジャズと常に時代をリードし、新しいジャズのあり方を模索してきたマイルスであるが、ギル・エバンスとのコラボレーションは、ともすると独善的なコンボによる、構成に流されがちなモダンジャズにとって、オーケストラゼーションというもう一つの大切な音楽性を知らしめる役割を果たしている。中でも、この作品は、カインド・オブ・ブルーの直後ののりに乗ったマイルスのソリストとしての一面をクローズアップさせながらも、エバンスのペンによって、新たなジャズ音楽の可能性を示唆している。個人的には、素晴らしい音楽ながら、コルトレーンの「至上の愛」同様、心して聴かなければならないタイプなので、ついつい敬遠勝ちになっていしまうが、名盤である事には変わりない。後のチック・コリアのスパニッシュモードの基になっているコンセプトに注目したい。

ギル・エバンス・オーケストラとマイルスが競演した第3作にして最高傑作。(第1作は『マイルス・アヘッド』、第2作は『ポーギー・アンド・ベス』)本作の白眉は何と言ってもアランフェス協奏曲(Concierto De Aranjuez (Adagio))だ。当初のLPには未収録だったConcierto De Aranjuezのパート1・2をボーナス・トラックとして加えたことでより一層魅力が増した。ロドリーゴのこの名曲はギター曲として有名だ。アレグロ・コン・スピリト→アダージョ→アレグロ・ジェンティーレの3楽章からなるこの曲の第2楽章をギルはアレンジしたわけだが実に見事だ。その中でソリストとしてペットを吹くマイルスはまさに『Another Side Of Miles Davis』である。しかしながらそこにはやはりマイルスのあの『音』が鳴っている。マイルスの残したアルバムを聴けば聴くほど、本当に同じ人の残した作品だろうかと思うほど音楽的レンジが広い。そしてものすごく多作だ。それでいながらマイルスのあの『音』は偏在し続けている。凄いことだ。この作品はそう言ったマイルスの作品群の最も『端』に位置した傑作である。

アランフェス協奏曲
マイルスデイビスのことをよく知らなかった頃、この曲を聴きました。
ジャズとも、クラッシックとも、ポピュラとも違い、心休まる思いがしました。
それ以来、マイルスデイビスの曲も聞くようになりました。
今でもNo1はアランフェス協奏曲です。

後に、製作のいきさつをラジオの解説で聞きました。
製作のいきさつは、だからこうなんだという感想を持ちましたが、忘れてしまいました。
