Best known to the public for his stabbing, perfectly placed trumpet notes behind Frank Sinatra, "Sweets" Edison could have lived comfortably and become rich from work in the record studios. But he was a jazzman to the core, and rather than that he took this gutty and swinging quintet to the corners of the world. The music is joyous, funky and rich, and it's rare for the listener to be taken aboard so completely to share the obvious enjoyment of a group of friends having a good time. Fortunately the recording quality is also good, and the beautiful lift provided by guitarist Freddie Green, bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Charli Persip comes through perfectly (listen to "The Very Thought Of You"). The thoughtful, crisp and spare piano playing of Jimmy Jones is also perfectly judged. Jimmy Forrest's tenor is both hard-toned and full, and it makes a fine contrast with the pithy and masterful note pacing of the leader. Edison loved his jazz so much that it was rare indeed for him to be less than inspired. Here, amongst friends, he is at his best. "Swing" is the operative word. --Steve Voce
