Sir Charles Mackerras's performances attempt to recreate the size and composition of the orchestras that Brahms himself knew, as well as the interpretive style of Romantic conducting, with its flexible tempos and freewheeling approach. That he does so without ever becoming vulgar or unmusical is a tribute to his qualities as a musician. This is Brahms with a difference, but one that you'll be happy to live with.
