These recordings from the thirties may not be as disciplined or scrupulous to the text as Rubinstein's subsequent remakes, but the pianist's big-heartedness, rhythmic vitality, and joie de vivre come through with flying colors. True, the 78 era produced fiercer and cleaner A FLat Polonaises from Solomon, Lhevinne, and Horowitz, and Artur Rubinstein doesn't quite match Horowitz's scintillation or Hofmann's lightness in the Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise. Still, this is big, generous playing by any standard. --Jed Distler
