Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval first captured attention outside his native Cuba with the dynamic band Irakere. Here he's paired with Irakere cofounder Chucho Valdés, and there's excitement and a comfortable familiarity in the air as they dig into a program set solidly in the bop mainstream. Sandoval can throw off cascades of blistering, whistling high notes that recall Maynard Ferguson, as on "Mambo Influenciado," but he's also a master of subtler sounds. His close-miked, Harmon-muted playing on "My Funny Valentine" reveals a bittersweet Miles Davis-like lyricism. Pianist Valdés is an ideal partner, playing with the same confidence, swing, and élan that animate Sandoval. Ron Matthewson on bass and Martin Drew on drums provide solid support. --Stuart Broomer

Best of Trumpeter
やはりSandovalは良い。Sandovalの参加しているどのバンドでのどの演奏を聞いても満足できないものがない。まさに最高のトランペッターである。なにより彼の音にはいろんな物が含まれている。そのときどきの感情や想い、彼の人間性までも伝わってくる気がする。このCDはどちらかというとラテン系ではなく、もう一つの彼の得意分野である落ち着いたJazzがメインになっている。落ち着いたと言っても、BGMとして聴くにはもったいなすぎる一枚である。
