It's fair to say that, for most people, Villa-Lobos is Brazilian classical music. The extent of his work is really too much to take in, but the series of Bachianas Brasileiras, Bach meets Brazil in an idealised fusion of northern and southern hemispheres, is the best place to start. Tilson Thomas gives you four of the best, including the popular No. 5 for soprano (Renée Fleming the sensuous soloist) and eight cellos. The others are all high on thrills, with the exhilarating No. 9 probably the best of all--true entertainment music with class! There's also the tenth of Villa-Lobos's Choros cycle: music that evokes the outside celebrations at the heart of traditional Brazilian music. This one features texts in the composer's pre-fabricated primitivism, evocative but with more than a hint of tongue in cheek. Performances are spot-on throughout, with Tilson Thomas relishing the sheer variety of sound available from the generally large forces. 全体的にそつのない演奏で特別に演奏がよいというわけではないですが、ブラジル風バッハが4曲、それにショーロス10番が入ってこの価格はかなりお買い得だと思います。全曲、聴きやすく難解なものは入っていませんので、入門用としては最適かなと思ったりします。
