The diminutive Chick Webb--tuberculosis of the spine had restricted his height to just four feet--was one of the most powerful, swinging drummers of the 1930s. His band had a reputation for "cutting" potentially superior orchestras and he was the leader who first employed Ella Fitzgerald. But that was later than the span covered by this collection (1931 to 1934). Here the attention is focused on the instrumental importance of the band, one of the most popular in Harlem in its day. Much of its success lay in its neat, workman-like arrangements and of the 23 titles included here no less than 17 were scored by Edgar Sampson. Several of these arrangements were also Sampson compositions, tunes which went on to become popular throughout the swing era and beyond. The collection contains the initial versions of such Sampson pieces as "If Dreams Come True", "Stompin' At The Savoy", "Don't Be That Way" and "Blue Lou". Four of the tunes were arranged by Benny Carter (one track is the first recording of Carter's tune "Blues In My Heart"). Webb's band also benefited from the heavily Louis Armstrong-influenced solo trumpet of Taft Jordan that is heard on nine of these tracks. --Steve Voce
