From Amazon.co.uk
Like many artists, Hines' career had its peaks and troughs. During the 1930s he lead a successful big band for years, many of them spent at Chicago's Grand Terrace. In the 40s his band became an incubator for bebop stars such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan. After working with Louis Arsmtrong's All Stars during the 50s he moved to the West Coast and disappeared from the headlines, although he still worked regularly in clubs around the area. Stanley Dance convinced him that there was still an audience for his unique and dazzling piano style and brought Hines to New York for a concert in 1964. After that Hines career took off, with international tours and many record sessions keeping him busy until his death in 1983. It was Dance who supervised this 1972 recording, a solo set of such depth, impact and richness that Tour de Force seems the only suitable title. Hines had large hands which gave him the ability to play tenths. More important, he knew how to use these gifts to the maximum effect. He had long ago perfected an "orchestral" style of solo playing in which full, spread chords were interspersed with glittering cascades of notes, sometimes with both hands in the treble half of the keyboard to increase the impact. The nine tunes presented here contain wonderfully expanded versions of songs such as "Mack The Knife", "Lonesome Road" and "Say It Isn't So". --Steve Voce
