About the Author
Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk. He is also a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, OFF SEASON, an updating of the Sawney Beane story, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He has always wondered what they would think of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. His short story THE BOX won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from HWA and he has written nine novels, the latest of which are JOYRIDE, STRANGLEHOLD and the sequel to OFF SEASON - OFFSPRING (coming 2003)- and RED.

読書で得られる最高度のサスペンス
　文字を読むことに苦痛を感じ、ページをめくるが怖くて仕方がない。本を読んだあとも暗い感情が胸を渦巻き、この話について考えるのも辛い。友達に勧めようという気分にもならない。
　そういった面で、本書は読書のレベルを超越している作品だ。一部の要素がそうであるにしても、こんな本には二度と出会えないだろう。

これまでにない恐怖
アメリカの郊外、閉鎖された小コミュニティの中で起こる残酷な物語。新しく引っ越してきた少女に対する卑劣な暴力。日常が非日常に代わる様を、その事件に参加しながら、語り手である私は克明に記録する。日に日にエスカレートしていくその「遊び」は史上最低の結末を持って幕を閉じる。キングも絶賛する巷で噂の作家による傑作。一人ぼっちの部屋で読む事はお勧めできない。

解放感
厳しい少女監禁物だと評判なので、覚悟して読んだのだが予想を遙かに越える悲惨な世界に、何度も途中で読むのを止めようかと思った。

だけど途中で投げ出すと、少女は傷だらけのまま僕の中で生き続ける。苦痛に顔を歪めながら読みつづけた。どんな形にしろ、終わりがあるというのは救いです。読み終えた僕は、安堵のため息をもらした。今までにない読後感だ。解放感。
