かっこよく生きる
　ビートジェネレーションの代表的な作品ですが、ピンクフロイドやウッドストック的なヒッピーさはありません。セクシャルな描写やスラングが多いものの非常にロマンティックで全体的に洗練された印象を持ちます。
　たいへん読みやすい作品なのですが、女性の私が読むと、この小説の恋愛観に非常にギャップを感じます。

詩を書き旅を愛する情熱的な男性は恋の相手としては最高ですが、彼らにとって関係をステディに保つ事は全く重要なことではないのかもしれません。
男性はそれをロマンスと呼ぶのかもしれませんが、男性の幼稚さ身勝手さに耐え難いもどかしさを感じます。

　ですが、若者が自由に目覚め強力なパワーを持ったあの時代、やりたい事をやって、自分らしく生きた人々は本当にパワフルで輝いていた。
この小説はそんなかっこいい人々の最高にかっこいい生き方を見せてくれる素晴らしい作品です。

青春そのもののほろ苦さ
僕がこの本に出会ったのは、ちょうど大学を卒業して半年くらいが経った頃だと思います。僕はフリーターとしてぶらぶらしていました。丁度そんな時にこの本に出会い、なにかやる気に満ち溢れたのを覚えています。旅を通して主人公の心証の変化、いわゆる大人への変化が実体験と微妙に重なり深い感銘を受けました。旅・友人・酒・女・音楽を通して60年代の若者を描写していますが、全然古くないです。この本を読むと、そんな実体験もないのに、なぜか自分の青春と重ね、ちょっとほろ苦くなります。そして、無償に旅（もしくは青春）を経験したくなります。この本を読んで、何故か僕は友人と四国へ行きました。今となってはほろ苦いいい経験です。

"IT"を求める旅
～第三部の第四章、サンフランシスコの酒場で狂熱ともいうべきジャズのライブ演奏を友人たちときいたあと、第五章の冒頭で、この小説のヒーロー、ディーンはサル（私）にこう言う、”Now, man, that alto man last night had～～ IT.”

この小説のテーマがはきっきり示された瞬間である。

“IT”とは何か。それは第四部のなかであきらかになります。第四部の第三章の中程でディーンはこの小説のクライマックスであるメキシコへの旅についてこう語る。”Man, this will finally take us to～～ IT!”

自動車旅行とジャズのライブシーンにあふれたこの小説の白眉は、第四部の後半、国境をこえたメキシコの売春宿で乱痴気騒ぎをしたあと一路メキシコシティーへと向かう旅路にあります。そこで彼らが何を見、何を感じたか・・・、そして”IT”とは何だったのか。すべてがあきらかになります。

第一部の東から西へのヒッチハイク旅行（ディーンは何故～～かあまり登場しない）、第二部のニューオリンズにオールド・ブル・リー（「裸のランチ」のウィリアム・バロウズがモデル）を訪ねるアメリカ南部への旅、第三部のサンフランシスコからニューヨークへの今度は西から東への旅・・・、それらの旅の描写は非常に素晴らしいものがありますが、第四部のメキシコへの旅の序章、それも壮大な序章だったのいうのがよく～～わかります。

そして最終章である第五部、ほんとうに短い第五部ですが、アメリカ文学史上に燦然と輝く散文としての到達点をここに見ることができます。特に最後のパラグラフは英文として私がこれ以上の見事な文章はない、とおもっている一文です。ゆっくりと味わってください。～
