But the rot at the core of our “friendship” with the Saudis was dramatically revealed when it became apparent that fifteen of the nineteen September 11 hijackers proved to be Saudi citizens.

In Sleeping with the Devil, Baer documents with chilling clarity how our addiction to cheap oil and Saudi petrodollars caused us to turn a blind eye to the Al Sa’ud’s culture of bribery, its abysmal human rights record, and its financial support of fundamentalist Islamic groups that have been directly linked to international acts of terror, including those against the United States. Drawing on his experience as a field operative who was on the ground in the Middle East for much of his twenty years with the agency, as well as the large network of sources he has cultivated in the region and in the U.S. intelligence community, Baer vividly portrays our decades-old relationship with the increasingly dysfunctional and corrupt Al Sa’ud family, the fierce anti-Western sentiment that is sweeping the kingdom, and the desperate link between the two. Baer not only reveals the outrageous excesses of a Saudi royal family completely out of touch with the people of its kingdom, he also takes readers on a highly personal search for the deeper roots of modern terrorism, a journey that returns time again and again to Saudi Arabia: to the Wahhabis, the powerful Islamic sect that rules the Saudi street; to the Taliban and al Qaeda, both of which Saudi Arabia helped to underwrite; and to the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the most active and effective terrorist groups in existence, which the Al Sa’ud have sheltered and funded. The money and arms that we send to Saudi Arabia are, in effect, being used to cut our own throat, Baer writes, but America might have only itself to blame. So long as we continue to encourage the highly volatile Saudi state to bank our oil under its sand—and so long as we continue to grab at the Al Sa’ud’s money—we are laying the groundwork for a potential global economic catastrophe.

世界最大のテロ支援国家は？
これほど面白い本は滅多にない．特に，今の世界情勢においては．元ＣＩＡの対テロ工作官として，主にイスラム圏で活動してきた著者の記述は生々しく，その内容は驚きの連続である．

サウジアラビアのサウド王家は，その腐敗した生活と増殖する王族を維持するため，巨額のオイルマネーをピンはねし続ける．しかし一般庶民は，その恩恵を受けることはない．石油以外の産業もなく，失業し未来への展望を失ったサウジアラビアの多くの若者たちは，イスラム原理主義へと傾倒して行く．サウド王家は，自分たちがテロの対象とならないようにするため，そしてイスラムの守護者としての体裁を繕うために，イスラム原理主義組織を支援し続ける．

面白いドキュメントだが鵜呑みにするのは危険
CIAの工作管理官だったという人のサウジアラビア＝アメリカ同盟の危うさを描く本．もとよりサウジアラビア王族の腐敗とかサウジアラビアの人口増加による社会安定性の低下は中東研究者にとって常識である．本書は石油と武器をめぐるアメリカ政界とサウジアラビアとの金の流れなどを平易に説明しておりその点では啓蒙書的役割を果たしうるだろう．

ただし各所にCIAの検閲による削除部分があったり，著者の記憶に頼った記述があり，信頼度については疑問を呈せざるをえない部分もある．それでもムスリム同胞団に注目し，一方でサウジアラビアのイスラームであるワッハーブ派を重要視し，両者の結節点として自力でイブン・タイミーヤにたどり着いている点は評価できる．学界と現実的政策の前衛たる工作員の結論が符合したことを示している．

本書でもっとも注意すべき点はムスリム同胞団そのものが秘密テロ組織であるかのように描かれていることである．ムスリム同胞団は現在ではきわめて曖昧かつ多様性をもった存在で各国でその様相は異なる．一方で政治的組織があり，テログループにきわめて近い組織もあるが，一方で病院運営や救貧などきわめて社会福祉団体的な役割を果たしている部分もある．ムスリム同胞団はもはや一枚岩で指揮系統が一本化された秘密結社などではない．

訳は平易で実に読みやすい．プロの仕事である．しかしイスラームやアラビア語についてはほとんど注意を払っていない模様で「アッラーの神（「の神」はいらない）」や「サイード・クトゥブ（サイイド・クトゥブ）」など許容しがたい誤記も散見される．長音関連のカタカナ音訳全般（フランス語も間違っている）にも信頼がおけないのは残念である．

サウジの腐敗が世界を滅ぼす？
中東情勢は現代社会において大きなカギを握る。その複雑にして理解不能な中東を安定させるとアメリカなどが画策するサウジアラビアも、一筋縄でいかないことを、元ＣＩＡ対テロ部門工作官が暴く驚愕のリポートだ。法も正義も定見さえないサウジアラビアのサウド一族の腐敗と不正実態。なぜか米国さえも黙認しているテロリストへの資金提供、そして米国政財界に与えるオイルマネーなどサウジアラビアの真相は、世界の危機が迫っていることを教えてくれる。
